ARTIST SUBMITTED BIO
Charles Dooman, a lifelong artist, has created art in almost every medium; from charcoals and pastels, to sculpture, silkscreens, block prints and watercolors. Since 1990, he has turned his attention exclusively towards the full-time production of automotive fine art. He currently paints with acrylics on canvas as he strives to emphasize the beautifully abstract, yet very graphic, imagery that can only be found when one takes a detailed, micro-view deep into the soul of the subject.
Should the viewer mentally remove the details specific to the subject, one can’t help but notice how the abstract qualities of shape and color, not the cars themselves, are the real focus of his work.
This extremely unique, though much-copied approach, and the graphic boldness of his realist style, highlight the wonderful beauty inherent in all the classic, exotic and top-of-the-line contemporary automobiles. To Charles, these cars are not merely objects-of-art, nor even pieces of art in-and-of themselves. Rather, he views them more like the soul of a woman and the beauty to be found therein; the deeper one looks, the more beauty one finds.
His paintings continually search for the ever-elusive, artistic soul of a car, and offer proof that these cars actually contain more art inside of them than their designers ever realized. Though known internationally as a specialist in automotive art, he will occasionally paint other subject matter when the mood strikes. His increasingly popular work has often been referred to as that of “the Andy Warhol of automotive art.”
Though rarely exhibiting in Wichita, he has personally exhibited in solo and group events all over the country, including such venues as the Hamptons in NY, Greenwich CT, New York City, Palm Beach, Detroit, Indianapolis, Chicago, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Kansas City, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Dallas, Austin, Colorado Springs, Steamboat Springs, Denver, Vail, Scottsdale, Los Angeles, Monterey and San Francisco.
Having been represented by galleries in Wichita, Dallas, San Francisco and Chicago, he is currently represented by the Legacy Motors Art Gallery in LA. In addition to exhibiting, he served for a dozen years with the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance as Site Coordinator, Art Show Host & Consultant, two years with the Hamptons Concours d’Elegance as Art Show Host & Consultant and seven years with a local gallery as Curator and Consultant.
Originally from Chicago, he grew up in the Midwest and currently resides in Wichita with his wife and family. His work can be found in numerous private and public collections on five continents.
